o.O
O.o

Off topic, but I just heard they officially canceled Spidey 4 and are making a REBOOT of the Spider-Man franchise. What's with that?! The Spider-Man movies are awesome, aren't reboots usually only made when the first outing is awful? (Like "Hulk"...)

Blast, reboots can also happen just to adjust to the shift in taste of society. Aside from reboots in general recently performing well at the box office (Star Trek), there are some other key elements at play. For one thing, audiences nowadays get bored if they see too much of the same stuff over and over again. After Spider-man, superhero movies followed a formula of embracing the melodrama and campiness of comics and ran with it.

Which is fine. But since Christopher Nolan's take on Batman raised the bar so high both financially and critically by taking an approach in the absolutely opposite direction of what Sam Raimi did with Spider-man, superhero movies that want to seriously be successful will probably 'reboot' to compete with the bar that was set by The Dark Knight. Also a string of mediocre performances by movies like Wolverine, The Hulk etc. doesn't help the traditional campy-approach's case.

But in addition to your note about reboots being for poorly performing films: Spider-man performed generally well at the box office, but it's no secret that part 3 left something of a foul taste in most people's mouths and with the recession, I doubt the studio is willing to gamble so much money when there's a good chance that people will say, "I hated the last one. No more, thanks."

Well, I'm sure it'll be good, but... MAN, I'm going to miss the ensemble! That's most of the fun, for me. :huggles:

I mean it was sad enough that Norrington was pretty much not coming back, and then Elizabeth. Now Will and Ragetti too, which--like I said--I assume means Pintel's out of the way as well. And I would be bold enough to guess that Murtogg and Mullroy are out. Pretty safe bet that Davy Jones is gone too, though--despite how awesome he is--that one isn't as much of a blow, for me, as he's a villain. Same with Beckett. Groves and Gilette are done, I'm sure...

(Sighs.) This is definitely going to have to sit in my brain as a semi-separate entity: it's going to be so different! :a

its going to be a very opportune title methinks.... 8)

anyway ladies, for those that missed it, here is McKenzies actual interview from the UK press assoctn.

Mackenzie not on board Pirates 4

(UKPA) – 1 day ago

Mackenzie Crook has revealed he is not appearing in the fourth Pirates Of The Caribbean movie.

The Office star has played hapless pirate Ragetti in the first three instalments of Jerry Bruckheimer's hit Hollywood blockbusters starring Johnny Depp, but told The Independent he has not been asked to appear in the next film.

Mackenzie said: "They haven't asked me, but actually I don't mind that at all - I'm a fan of the first one especially and I think the trilogy we've made is great, I'd almost like them to leave it there."

The 38-year-old actor, who played geeky Gareth in ground-breaking BBC comedy The Office which ran for just two series, likes to quit while he's ahead.

He said: "I'm a big fan of that. If people want more, then, sure, give them more if you can keep the standard. Quite possibly they do and quite possibly they can, so that's great. But my pirating days are over."

Mackenzie - who is currently starring on the West End stage in Jerusalem - enjoyed his blockbuster experience, and even has a skull and cross-bones tattoo to remember it by, but confesses he missed his wife and son and London home while filming on location.

He said: "It wasn't the Caribbean holiday that everyone imagines. There were times when it was quite tough ... when you're in the Bahamas in a resort for months on end, you start going crazy, become an alcoholic ... I went fishing a bit.

"But after a while this depression would start creeping in. You're in this tropical paradise but you can't be bothered to go out and do anything at all."

On a way brighter note, there are at least 3 news agencies reporting that Penelope Cruz is in serious negotiations to join the cast of OST....

now thats interesting, very interesting...lol... they made quite an explosive shmokin' couple in BLOW>>> and I can see the total opposite female icon to the classic fair english rose of aristocratic Elizabeth, being very very appealing....so I fer one, have me fingers and all else crossed that this comes off!!! :dance :laugh :aar:

The official Pirates of the Caribbean website has been updated!

If you click on "Movies" you'll see they have a video for On Stranger Tides... it's basically just an animated version of the logo with music playing for two minutes. Pointless?

Hot Spanish actress Penelope Cruz is looking forward to starring in the fourth edition of the Pirates of the Caribbean series. She will be joining Johnny Depp who has already signed up for this latest installment.
Pirates Of The Carribean 4: On Stranger Tides

It seems that Keira Knightley, who had starred in the first three films of the famous series, is not the only one to quit the franchise. After her exit in 2008, Orlando Bloom, who played one of the lead roles, will also be quitting this year. Along with the duo, Mackenzie Crook, the British Comedian who starred as the witty pirate, has also quit.

But Johnny Depp still hangs onto the franchise and has agreed to don the role of the famous Captain Jack Sparrow in the fourth edition of the series. The movie is planned to be released in 2011 and Johnny is reportedly being paid a huge amount of around $33.6 million dollars. The movie is titled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Meanwhile, it’s reported that Penelope Cruz is preceding with discussions on her role in the film, which is being handled by Rob Marshall, the director of Nine, in which Penelope also starred.

more news to get excited about.... :D :arr :yahoo

hy are we not surprised that veteran actor Ian McShane has landed one of the most coveted roles in the upcoming film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides? According to THR, he’s in negotiations to star as the infamous Blackbeard in the fourth film opposite Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will be directed by Rob Marshall, and already has Depp and Oscar winner Penelope Cruz set to co-star. McShane is in talks to play Blackbeard, “whose real name was Edward Teach — who piloted the ship Queen Anne’s Revenge.” Details surrounding the film’s plot are still under wraps but it will have something to do with the Fountain of Youth.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is scheduled for release on May 20, 2011, which means production on the film should start sometime later this year. Even though Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will be missing this time around, it looks like Disney has found a way to make this film work without them. McShane has been in the business for over 40 years, but gained mass acclaim when he starred as the cruel brothel owner on the HBO series, “Deadwood.”

Interesting, very very interesting...

Ian McShane....know the name, not the face.... :preading off to Google I guess! Eliza will have to watch the movie w/me so she can translate for Penelope Cruz. Perhaps they'll give us subtitles? I do love a good foreign film! :P

Um.... I got so confused reading the book, I honestly can't remember if Blackbear is actually one of the characters? I hope they can straighten out the storyline a bit!

Ah! I recognized the face, not the name....I don't know, to me this isn't POTC, this is Jack #4. With more big names signing on, I'm sure it'll pull in more viewers, but it doesn't have the same feel as before to me. Am I just out in left field? I still think they should have Tim Curry as one of the bad guys. Or Alan Rickman. They can be so bad and yet so stinking funny doing it that I think they'd be a perfect fit!

I'm sure they'll have Penelope play a spaniard - wasn't the whole fountain of youth supposed to be found by the spanish in florida? or something like that?

Ian McShane-Liked him in KINGS(shortlived TV series) and I see he also have done The PIllar of the Earth WHICH was a great book I read a while back. I like the idea of not a huge known playing these characters....makes them more believable.(ok beyond Johnny)

Thanks for the link Paw! I laughed pretty good at how they pronounced Bayou LeBatre! I hope they can keep the helicopters and looky-loos away while they are filming, from the ship and from the hotels!

I hope the Pearl is safe now, what with the tsunami warnings hitting Hawaii! :O
