What were your favorites growing up?

We pirates what can read all had to start somwhere! What were books that you remember loving to read (or have read to you) as a child? This is a hot topic in my office since I have a soon-to-be second grader, and my coworker on the other side of the wall has several grandchildren who will be reading soon. We trade book names back and forth to add to our reading lists.

I'll start! (authors are great, but not necessary)

Johnny Tremain
The Giving Tree
Where the Wild Thing Are
Old MacDonald Had an Apartment House
(I think the same person who wrote Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs that is now a movie wrote this..)
That Noodlehead Epaminodas
Little Bunny Follows His Nose
(scratch 'n sniff!)
Caps for Sale
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Owl at Home

Old Yeller
Nancy Drew series
The Campfire Girls series ( old books of my mom's)
any Disney book they put out with teenagers in it ( Annette, etc)
Gullivers Travels
The Incredible Journey
any book that had a horse or dog in the title... :D

I was a ferocious reader and still am...

Aye the Nancy Drew series were good. :) I like Gulliver's Travels, but can you believe Old Yeller was not required reading when I was a kid? I've never read the whole thing.

Anyone ever read The Boxcar Children? That was a good one, too.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff
Curious George
Harold and the Purple Crayon

Any books with dinosaurs or caves in them!

When I got a little older I remember reading anything by Jack London or Jules Verne! And I liked the Hardy Boys series even better than Nancy Drew! And I do remember liking the Boxcar Children series!

Caps for Sale and Nancy Drew! I second those.

I was also a fan of Trixie Beldon and the Chronicles of Narnia. And the Bobbsey Twins.

Hey BC, do you remember the Shy Stegosaurus of Cricket Creek? If my aging brain remembers correctly there were three or four books in that series.

Very young I went for The Cat in the Hat, but later I liked anything science fiction or adventure fiction related. I guess that has not changed much (the sci. fi. and adventure part). My favorite author now is Dean Koontz, however he has gotten a bit spiritual for me lately.

I remember the stegosaurus series!!! I loved them!

(Hey Silver Dog, I was reading Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz whilst reclining in my hospital bed! Now, that's what you call ironic! :D )

I was just thinking about "The Boxcar Children" books today on my way to work. Weird that I now read about them here today. I'm listening for the "Twilight Zone" music.....

Apparently they've made either a tv series or a movie out of it, and updated the books, so they are not the same as we remember....poor little blokes won't know how good of a tale it was unless they get hold of a "vintage" copy!

Whee, I'm bumping this thread, and also adding to it some names I haven't seen on the lists yet. ;)

Encylopedia Brown
Sammy Keyes
Chronicles of Narnia
[okay, so BJ already mentioned it...but Narnia was a critical part of my childhood...especially since BJ & I grew up with a lamppost in our front yard] ;)
Young Jedi Knights
The Crystal Star
[I was a bit of a Star Wars nerd back then...still am now, I guess! xD]
Millicent Min
Zucchini
Dear America
From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler
Wild At Heart
Magic Attic Club
Derwood, Inc
Hatchet
and The River

and when I was a little older [preteen/young teen], I fell in love with the Redwall series :]

The Encyclopedia Song? Heck yes! That's how I knew how to spell it (and won a spelling bee with that word) when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade.

Well, so long as you recognized Encyclopedia Brown, I can't object! :D What would I give to be able to find those books now.....

[I remember you winning that spelling bee, BJ. ;) ]
